Discovering the city of Thessaloniki is an experience you will never forget. Although not as famous as Athens, Thessaloniki hides many treasures to discover. Coming to Thessaloniki is like visiting a great museum. There are up to 15 monuments in the city that have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. During your visit you will be able to see the heritage of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire in the architecture of the houses and buildings.
The tour starts next to one of the city's landmarks, the White Tower, also known as Lefkós Pýrgos. This tower was part of the ancient walls that surrounded the city. It is thirty metres high and from here you will have a breathtaking view of the coastline.
Don't miss the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, one of the best in Greece. Here you can see a large collection of pieces that tell the interesting history of the city throughout its different eras.
Another essential stop on the City Sightseeing route is the Church of Agios Dimitrios, the most important church in the city. It was built in Byzantine times, when Thessaloniki was the most important city in the empire. Don't miss the beautiful mosaics inside the church.
During your trip to Thessaloniki, you must visit the historic neighbourhood of Ano Poli, the city's Upper Town. It is noted for its colour and its numerous taverns and cafés. This area was one of the few that survived the Great Fire of 1917, which affected many of the city's monuments. You can also discover the Byzantine fortress of Heptapyrgion for unique views of the entire city.
