Overview
Reykjavik is the world’s most northerly capital city and Europe’s most westerly. It’s also home to half Iceland’s population, by far the country’s biggest city and very possibly the only one most people have heard of. It’s a hugely popular tourist destination because Iceland is like another world.
As you might expect, Reykjavik is a city that’s very focused on the sea, which makes the Reykjavik Maritime Museum a brilliant place to hop off the bus. The museum tells the story of the city’s relationship with the sea. It was the sea that brought them here initially and it’s the sea that deeds them today. Another fascinating destination is Perlan, an unusual looking building, which is home to an exhibition centre, a planetarium and an observation deck. There’s even an ice cave. All of which has made it the city’s most popular attraction.
Another unique attraction is the thermal swimming pool at Laugardalaur Valley. Hop off here and you can take a dip in the warm waters of the naturally-heated pool. The pool is in a park, which is also an excellent place to spend an hour or two. The excellent botanical garden is definitely worth a visit.
A more unusual stop is the Höfdi House, an isolated impressive building which found fame as the site of the 1986 Reykjavik Summit between Gorbachev and Reagan in 1986, an event which was important in bringing to an end the Cold War. Today, the house is a popular tourist attraction. Also unusual, though for different reasons, is Hallgrímskirkja, so make sure you hop off there to see this incredible-looking church, which likes like no other religious building in the world. That’s only a beginning to what you can see Reykjavik with your 24-hour hop-on hop-off ticket.
