Overview
Malaga is a city that rewards thorough exploration. The more you see of it, the more you realise that there is to see. It’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, as it was founded by the Phoenicians almost 3,000 years ago! It’s a city with a history that’s long and rich, and a present that’s vibrant and energetic.
To experience one of the oldest parts of the city, hop off at Gibralfaro. Here, the views over the city and the sea are simply amazing. The old Moorish fort is more than worth a visit too. There have been fortifications on this site since the 8th-century BC and looking at the views, it’s easy to understand why.
Hop back on the bus and head for Paseo del Parque, where you’ll be able to enjoy a relaxing stroll along this verdant avenue, before heading to the Alcazaba, the city’s spectacular 1-000-year-old Moorish citadel. It’s an incredibly beautiful building and a place to lose yourself in dreams of the city’s Moorish past.
For a total change of pace, hop off at La Malagueta, the city’s very own beach. Take some time to swim in the sea or stretch out on the side and you’ll forget you’re in one of Spain’s liveliest cities. When you’re ready to continue exploring, just hop back on the bus and head for one of the city’s many other exciting destinations. For example, there are many brilliant museums you can visit, such as the Museo Carmen Thyssen and the Picasso Museum. If you’re an art lover, you’ll really be spoilt for choice.
One of the city’s most enjoyable museums is MIMMA, the Interactive Music Museum. Here, you can enjoy the displays about the history of music and then, enjoy yourself in the rooms full of instruments that you can actually pick up and play. It’s a brilliant experience, especially banging the gong!
