Overview
Beirut is sometimes known as “the Paris of the Middle East”, but Paris is a relative newcomer when compared with Beirut, a city with over five thousand years of history. With City Sightseeing, you’ll be able to see everything that makes this city so special.
Hop on the bus at Martyrs’ Square (though you can hop on at any stop), but before you do, have a look around this historic square, which is the city’s most important public space. It’s borne witness to much during its lifetime as you can see from the bullet holes in the statue in the centre of the square.
Hop off at St. Nicholas Stairs, also known as the Art Stairs, due to the regular art exhibitions that take place on them. The stairs are in the Gemmayzeh neighbourhood, a relaxed area with lots of great places to grab a drink or something to eat, so it’s an excellent breakfast, lunch or even dinner destination.
Where to get off the bus next? The Roman Baths are a great destination. 2,000 years old, these public baths were built when the city was called Berytus. They can be found in the Gardens of Forgiveness, which is a place of calm designed to help the city heal from previous conflict. Close by are the Beirut Souks, an excellent place to do some shopping and find a souvenir of your Beirut trip.
To see some of the city’s most important religious buildings, hop off at St George Maronite Cathedral, which is a stone’s throw from two mosques and three other cathedrals of different denominations. They’re living proof of the city’s varied and complex history!
For some natural beauty, head to Raouche, where you can see the incredible Pigeon Rocks and maybe enjoy a drink on one of the cliff-top cafés while you enjoy the views of the sea. With your 24-hour ticket, you’ll have time to explore all these places and more.
