Overview

The Spanish Synagogue in Prague is known as the most beautiful synagogue in Europe. It was built in 1868 on the site of the oldest Prague Jewish house of prayer ("the Old Shul"), designed in a Moorish style. The remarkable interior decor features a low stucco arabesque of stylized Islamic motifs, which are also applied to the walls, doors, and gallery balustrades.
In the later part of the 20th century the Jewish Museum took ownership and began work on its restoration. This large project - spread out over several decades - was only truly completed in December 2020. The Spanish Synagogue is now a beautifully restored building, set in the heart of the Jewish Quarter. It is truly a sight to behold.
In the evening, the Spanish Synagogue becomes a wonderful setting for classical music concerts.
The concert program varies – there are 4 programs which include the best of Gershwin, the best of the world and Czech music, Jewish traditional songs, Bolero and Hallelujah. It includes solo and ensemble pieces by famous composers such as Verdi, Rossini, Mozart, and Bach, alongside great 19th-century Czech composers including Dvořák and Smetana. Plus popular works of Gershwin, Weber, Bernstein, etc.
The group Czech Collegium is largely made up of leading players from the Prague FOK Symphony Orchestra. It has been in existence since 1997 as an ensemble which devotes itself mainly to chamber music - it has been well received both in its home country and abroad.
So take a moment out of your day of sightseeing Prague to relax and take in some beautiful music, surrounded by historic works of art in the Spanish Synagogue.
